NEW FLORIDA VETERINARY TELEMEDICINE LAW

Exciting news!

The PETS (Providing Equity in Telehealth Services) Act is now officially a law!

Starting July 1, 2024, Florida pet owners can connect with veterinarians instantly via their smartphones or computers, making veterinary care more accessible and convenient.

Under this new law, veterinarians across Florida can harness the power of telemedicine to provide virtual care, revolutionizing the way pets receive medical attention.

Previously, Florida law required veterinarians to examine animals in person before practicing or prescribing medicine. This created unnecessary hurdles for pet owners, shelters, and veterinarians, especially given the current shortage of veterinary professionals.

HOW THIS LAW CAN HELP:

In-person veterinary visits can seriously stress out pets, causing them to act fearfully or even aggressively. For pet owners, these visits can pose challenges, especially for those with limited transportation, tight work schedules, living in veterinary-deprived areas, or facing disabilities or age-related difficulties that make it hard to bring pets in without assistance.

Virtual veterinary telemedicine appointments are a game-changer for ALL pet owners and their furry friends. Even veterinarians win here, as it allows them to maintain top-notch care despite staff shortages and heavier workloads.

BENEFITS:

Pet telemedicine brings numerous advantages to pet owners, such as:

1. Convenience: Pet owners can easily obtain veterinary care without leaving their home, removing the hassle of traveling to a clinic.

2. Cost savings: Online veterinary services often come at a lower price compared to traditional in-person visits.

3. Increased access to care: Those living in rural areas or with transportation challenges can still access veterinary care through telemedicine.

4. Reduced stress for pets: For pets that get anxious at the clinic, telemedicine provides the comfort of receiving care in their own familiar surroundings.

LIMITATIONS:

Telemedicine for dogs (and other pets) does have its drawbacks, like:

1. No physical exam: Vets can’t perform physical exams via video chat, making it tough to diagnose some conditions.

2. Limited diagnostic testing: Certain diagnostic tests need specialized equipment that isn't accessible during a telemedicine appointment.

3. Emergencies: For urgent situations, online vet care might not be enough, and pet owners may need to get immediate in-person veterinary help.
