Helping Horses
Belmopan, Belize

January 2024

Dr. Amber was on the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize working on a short-term contract when was contacted by a horse owner from the mainland with a desperate siutation. Two young horses were suffering with rapidly growing tumors on their legs. These lesions were suspected to be fibroblastic sarcoid tumors, a common but challenging condition in horses. Dr. Amber swiftly performed surgery to remove the tumors.

The surgical procedure involved carefully anesthetizing the horses and excising the tumors. To ensure the thorough elimination of any remaining tumor cells, the affected areas were meticulously cauterized. This step was critical in reducing the risk of recurrence. We are optimistic about the full and speedy recovery of these two resilient horses.

Dr. Amber's dedication to their care exemplifies our unwavering commitment to enhancing animal health and well-being, no matter where our work takes us.

Sea Turtle treated by Dr. Amber in Belize

Loggerhead Turtle Rescue
Ambergris Caye, Belize

November 2023

There is never a dull moment in veterinary medicine! This massive male loggerhead turtle presented on emergency one late afternoon. He sustained some critical injuries that were presumed to be from a boat propeller. Upon presentation, he was in serious condition and gasping for air. He lost his left hind flipper and had multiple deep soft tissue lacerations all over his body. Unfortunately, his trachea was irreparably damaged due to an exceptionally deep wound.

Dr. Amber & her team did their best to save him but ultimately he lost the battle.

Being a veterinarian has its ups and downs and this was one of the down days.

As always, your donations go towards helping all animals even if they don’t have an owner.

Spay/Neuter Campaign
Lviv, Ukraine

August 2023, October 2023, April 2024

The conflict in Ukraine has impacted not only humans but also animals. Dr. Amber proudly represented World Tails in Ukraine as part of the Greater Good Charities' "Good Fix" team. Through their collaborative efforts, the team successfully completed three clinics, providing vital services to over 2,100 cats and dogs. These services included safe sterilization, vaccination, microchipping, and parasite treatment, ensuring a healthier future for these animals.

This remarkable achievement was made possible thanks to our invaluable ground partner, Home Of Rescued Animals who have recused numerous animals of all species from war-torn conditions. Their unwavering support and dedication were crucial in making these clinics a reality. We are incredibly grateful for their partnership, which allowed us to reach so many animals in need.

The entire team, from veterinarians to volunteers, has been nothing short of extraordinary, and the success of these campaigns reflects their hard work and commitment. Together, we have made a significant impact on animal welfare in Ukraine, and we look forward to continuing this important work in the future.

Belgian Malinois Working Dog in Angola, Africa

Remote Veterinary Assistance
Waco Kungo, Angola, Africa

January 2023 to July 2023

Dr. Amber's husband, Chris, was engaged in a working dog security contract in Waco Kungo, Angola, a notably remote area with no access to veterinary care. The contract involved three working canines, and the isolation of their location posed significant challenges for their well-being.

To address any medical issues that arose with the dogs, Dr. Amber utilized telemedicine, offering remote consultations and guidance to manage their health concerns. Being a working dog is dangerous! During this period each of the canines sustained some type of injury.  One suffered severe injuries when her front leg was caught in a steel hunting trap. The other two sustained injuries to their legs while in pursuit of a suspects.

World Tails covered all treatment costs for these injuries, thanks to the generous donations from our supporters. This support allowed us to provide critical care to the dogs despite the remote location and challenging circumstances.

Cameroon, Africa

May/June 2022

Emaciated dog being treated in Qatar
Dog recovered after being treated for almost dying

Saving Xena
Doha, Qatar

December 2020

While Dr. Amber was working on contract in Qatar, she encountered one of the most heart-wrenching cases of her career—a severely ill street dog who was barely clinging to life. This poor animal had been found by a compassionate Good Samaritan and brought to the hospital in a critical state. The dog was barely responsive, emaciated to the point where her ribs were clearly visible, and her body was cold from prolonged exposure to the harsh elements. To make matters worse, she was covered in fleas and ticks, which had drained her already weakened body of strength. It was clear that without immediate intervention, she would have succumbed to her condition within hours.

With no owner to provide financial support, the veterinary clinic management wanted to euthanize. Despite her dire situation, there was something in this little dog's eyes that spoke of a fierce will to survive—a spark of life that had not yet been extinguished. Moved by her determination, Dr. Amber decided to provide medical care with funds from World Tails. This little fighter was christened "Xena", after the famous warrior princess known for her strength and resilience.

Dr. Amber and her team worked tirelessly to nurse Xena back to health. They provided her with round-the-clock care, including necessary medical treatments, a warm and safe environment, and nourishing food to help her regain her strength. Slowly but surely, Xena began to recover, her spirit as strong as ever despite the odds stacked against her. The transformation was remarkable; the once-emaciated, sickly dog began to thrive under the care and attention she received, showing the true power of love and dedicated veterinary care.

Xena’s journey didn’t end with her recovery. Thanks to Dr. Amber's close friend, Maria Garcia Alcalde, who not only found Xena a loving forever home but also provided crucial financial assistance during her recovery, Xena’s story took a joyful turn. Maria’s efforts ensured that Xena would be placed with an amazing family who would continue to care for her and give her the life she deserved.

Today, Xena is a healthy, happy dog, living with her new family and enjoying the second chance at life she fought so hard for. Her story is a testament to the resilience of animals, the power of compassion, and the impact that dedicated individuals can have on the lives of those in need. Dr. Amber, Maria, and the team at the hospital in Qatar gave Xena more than just medical care—they gave her hope, love, and a future filled with happiness.

Rescue Mission
San Pedro, Belize

January 15, 2020

World Tails sprang into action to rescue seven dogs from an extremely dire situation in San Pedro, Belize. These poor animals had been abandoned when their owner moved off the island, leaving them without any care, food, or water. When World Tails arrived, they found the dogs in a heartbreaking state: their coats were severely matted, they were emaciated, covered in fleas and ticks, and forced to live in their own excrement.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the World Tails team quickly intervened. They rescued the dogs from this appalling environment and immediately began the process of cleaning them up. Each dog received a thorough grooming to remove the painful mats in their fur, as well as medical treatment to eliminate the fleas and ticks that had infested their bodies. The team also provided them with much-needed nourishment, offering food, clean water, and most importantly, love and compassion to help these neglected animals begin their journey to recovery.

Understanding the importance of their long-term well-being, World Tails sponsored the sterilization and vaccination of all seven dogs. This critical step not only ensured that they were protected from diseases but also helped to prevent future overpopulation issues.

Thanks to the dedication and care provided by World Tails, all seven dogs were transformed from neglected, suffering animals into healthy, happy pets ready for a fresh start. Their story took a joyful turn as each one found a new forever home where they could live out their lives in comfort and love. This rescue mission underscored World Tails’ unwavering commitment to animal welfare and their ability to make a profound difference in the lives of animals in need.

Free Vaccination Clinics - Belize

January 2020

World Tails took part in a community-driven initiative by organizing two free vaccination clinics in San Pedro, Belize, aimed at supporting the local Belizean population and their beloved pets. These clinics were designed to provide much-needed veterinary care, ensuring that pets in the area received essential health services that might otherwise be out of reach for many families.

The clinics were a tremendous success with over 50 pets receiving vaccinations, deworming treatments, and flea and tick prevention all at no cost to their owners. The event was more than just a medical intervention; it was an opportunity to engage with the community, educate pet owners about the importance of regular veterinary care, and build lasting relationships based on trust and compassion.

By offering these services for free, World Tails helped to ensure that the pets in San Pedro were protected against common diseases and parasites, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the community. Spay/Neuter Campaign
Mae Chem, Thailand

February 3-8, 2019

World Tails joined forces with Loop Abroad for a crucial spay/neuter and vaccination campaign in Mae Cham, Thailand, as part of Loop Abroad's Veterinary Semester Abroad program. This partnership was designed to address the urgent need for population control and disease prevention among the local animal population while providing valuable hands-on experience for veterinary students.

Dr. Amber, a skilled and compassionate veterinarian, played a central role in the campaign. Over the course of the project, she performed surgeries on 56 dogs and 58 cats, successfully spaying and neutering a total of 114 animals. These procedures were essential not only for controlling the local animal population but also for improving the overall health and well-being of the community’s pets.

In addition to her surgical work, Dr. Amber dedicated her time to educating and mentoring the students participating in the Veterinary Semester Abroad program. She provided comprehensive instruction on proper surgical preparation and techniques, ensuring that the students gained a deep understanding of each step involved in the process. Dr. Amber also guided the students through the critical aspects of anesthesia and recovery, emphasizing the importance of safety and care throughout the entire procedure.

This collaborative effort between World Tails and Loop Abroad not only made a significant impact on the animal community in Mae Cham but also played a vital role in the education and professional development of the next generation of veterinarians. The students left with invaluable experience and knowledge, while the animals benefited from improved health and a reduced risk of overpopulation. This campaign highlighted the power of collaboration in achieving both immediate and long-term positive outcomes for animals and communities alike.

Dr. Amber spearheaded an ambitious and impactful sterilization and rabies vaccination campaign in the rural community of Mzuzu, Malawi, in partnership with All Creatures Trust. This initiative marked World Tails' inaugural campaign, setting a powerful precedent for future efforts aimed at improving animal welfare in underserved regions.

Each animal was also vaccinated against rabies, a vital step in protecting both the animals and the community from this deadly disease. The comprehensive approach taken during the campaign not only addressed immediate health concerns but also laid the groundwork for long-term improvements in animal welfare.

In addition to the medical procedures, the campaign included extensive community outreach projects and educational seminars.
