Bela Bela, South Africa

June 2018 & June 2019

Dr. Amber served as an instructor for Loop Abroad, where she played a pivotal role in educating pre-veterinary and veterinary technician students at Nova's Legacy Wildlife Center, a renowned cheetah breeding facility in South Africa.

At the facility, Dr. Amber delivered comprehensive lectures covering a wide range of topics, including cheetah anatomy and physiology, comparative anatomy of African big cats, conservation medicine, and various aspects of veterinary medicine related to wildlife. Her instruction went beyond the classroom as she conducted hands-on laboratories, where students gained practical experience in essential skills such as suturing techniques, conducting physical examinations on multiple species, performing blood and fecal testing, and mastering basic medical math calculations.

In addition to the medical training, Dr. Amber guided students in creating enrichment projects for the captive animals. She provided expert direction on the feasibility and execution of these projects, ensuring that the students' ideas were both innovative and beneficial to the animals' well-being.

Dr. Amber's ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals to develop a deep passion for wildlife conservation and the welfare of captive animals. Through her teaching and mentorship, she aims to equip these future veterinarians with the knowledge, skills, and compassion needed to make a positive impact in the field of wildlife conservation and veterinary medicine.

During a sterilization and rabies vaccination campaign in the rural community in Malawi, Dr. Amber, in partnership with All Creatures Trust, played a key role in leading community outreach projects and educational seminars. These efforts were specifically designed to raise awareness about the critical importance of spaying, neutering, and vaccinating pets, while also educating the local population on responsible pet ownership and effective animal care practices.

By actively engaging with the community, World Tails and All Creatures Trust worked to instill a lasting culture of compassion and care for animals. Their educational initiatives aimed to empower residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain the health and well-being of their pets, ensuring that the positive impact of the campaign would extend well beyond its duration.

The success of this campaign was not only reflected in the number of animals treated but also in the enthusiastic reception and participation from the Mzuzu community. This collaborative effort underscored the transformative power of education and the significant impact that well-coordinated veterinary care can have on both animals and people in rural areas.
